چکیده

This paper investigates the recognition process of Japanese kanii and sentences fbr Chinese bilinguals and Native Japanese speakers <NJS), by analyzing the event-related potential (ERP) differences between the two groups while they visually recognized Japanese kanji and sentences. The results showed that no significant differences were found between the two groups while they recognized Japanese kanii, but significant difftrences were found in the Japanese sentences condition. The results demonstrated that the neural mechanisms of recognition processes of Japanese sentences including kana between the two groups were not identical. When recognizing ambiguous sentences, Chinese bilinguals' P600 only appeared over the right frontal obe, refiecting that syntactic integration and revision of ambiguous sentences for Chinese bilinguals was related with the right hemjsphere. The rcsults showed for Chinesc bilinguals, the diMculty of Japanese ranguage learning was the recognition and understanding of Japanese sentences with kana, not Japanese kanii. We would like to providc a scientific learning method fbr Chinese bilinguals to enhance thcir Japanese language learning eMciency frorn the aspect ofbrain science, JPbysiol Anthmpol 28av: 19J -19Z 2009 http:1/www.jstage,j st.gojp/browseijpad [DOI: IO.2114ljpal2g.191] Keywerds: event-related potential, N400, P600, Chinese bilinguals, Japanese ]anguage processing

Native-like Event-related Potentials in Processing the Second Language Syntax: Late Bilinguals

Background: The P600 brain wave reflects syntactic processes in response to different first language (L1) syntactic violations, syntactic repair, structural reanalysis, and specific semantic components. Unlike semantic processing, aspects of the second language (L2) syntactic processing differ from the L1, particularly at lower levels of proficiency. At higher L2 proficiency, syntactic violatio...

Master Thesis Analysis of the Effects of Japanese-Chinese Machine Translation with Kanji/Simplified Chinese Conversion

Currently, most Japanese-Chinese machine translations use English as an intermediary language. Because of lack of enough Japanese-Chinese bilingual dictionaries, there is less precise in Japanese-Chinese machine translation than Japanese-English or Chinese-English machine translations. In order to make translations smooth and adequate, it is necessary and efficient for native people to modify t...

Neural substrates of phonological selection for Japanese character Kanji based on fMRI investigations

Japanese and Chinese both share the same ideographic/logographic character system. How these characters are processed, however, is inherently different for each language. We harnessed the unique property of homophone judgment in Japanese kanji to provide an analogous Chinese condition using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 33 native Japanese speakers. We compared tw...

Recent Results of Online Japanese Handwriting Recognition and Its Applications

This paper discusses online handwriting recognition of Japanese characters, a mixture of ideographic characters (Kanji) of Chinese origin, and the phonetic characters made from them. Most Kanji character patterns are composed of multiple subpatterns, called radicals, which are shared among many (sometimes hundreds of) Kanji character patterns. This is common in Oriental languages of Chinese ori...

Event-Related Potentials of Bottom-Up and Top-Down Processing of Emotional Faces

Introduction: Emotional stimulus is processed automatically in a bottom-up way or can be processed voluntarily in a top-down way. Imaging studies have indicated that bottom-up and top-down processing are mediated through different neural systems. However, temporal differentiation of top-down versus bottom-up processing of facial emotional expressions has remained to be clarified. The present st...
